Biography:

Matt Sherwood is a trial lawyer who has tried over 30 cases in state and federal courts and has handled nearly 20 matters on appeal. Matt is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law and Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. When he obtained his certification in Civil Trial Law in 2017, he was the youngest attorney in the state of Texas to hold both Board Certifications.

Matt’s practice focuses on representing individuals and businesses in broad array of disputes, including oil and gas, construction, commercial, and civil litigation. He has successfully tried cases in each of these areas and has resolved several hundred other disputes without the need for a trial. In oil and gas matters, Matt regularly represents clients in production in paying quantity disputes, contract disputes, joint operating disputes, surface damages, and oilfield injury claims. In construction litigation, Matt has extensive experience representing parties in all aspects of construction disputes, including construction defect claims, bond claims, mechanic’s liens, and design claims; Matt has successfully represented owners, general contractors, subcontractors, design professionals and public entities.

In commercial litigation, Matt has represented numerous businesses and individuals in contract disputes, products liability, defamation, banking disputes, secured transaction litigation, eminent domain/condemnation, and DTPA claims. In personal injury matters, Matt has handled injury and wrongful death cases that involve negligence, gross negligence, premises liability, Dram Shop liability, and non-subscriber litigation. Matt has handled personal injury and wrongful death matters for clients on both the defense side and plaintiff side.

Matt’s success has led to his selection as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, a national association of some of the best trial lawyers in the country. Matt is also a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation (an honor bestowed on only 0.33% of Texas lawyers). Additionally, Matt was selected as a Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters in 2023 and was named a Rising Star by this same publication every year from 2012 to 2022.

Matt served on the Executive Committee for the Amarillo Area Bar Association for eight years, including serving as President from 2021-2022. Matt currents chairs the Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers chapter in Amarillo, which focuses on fighting against addiction issues in the profession and supporting mental health initiatives for attorneys.

Matt attended Brown University and Texas Tech University for his undergraduate education. He receiving his B.B.A. in Accounting in 2005 from Texas Tech, magna cum laude. Matt graduated summa cum laude in 2008 from the Texas Tech University School of Law, finishing in the top 10 of his class and earning the Order of the Coif designation.

Matt and his wife, Robin, have two children, Olivia and William. In his free time, Matt coaches his son’s basketball team (the Amarillo Golden Goats), playing too many sports (golf, tennis, pickleball, basketball, and hockey, among others), cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, and reading. Matt serves on the Board of Directors of Kids, Inc., and the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Maverick Boys and Girls Club, and Amarillo Habitat for Humanity.
